Telltale Signs of a Secure Apartment

Learn the signs you can use to determine how safe an apartment is.

Many people consider personal security when looking for apartments to rent. Fortunately, there are telltale signs you can use to determine how safe an apartment is. Below are some of these signs.

Lockable Doors and Windows

Many criminals, such as burglars, are opportunistic and love easy work. For example, a closed window or a difficult-to-open window will discourage many burglars. Therefore, a secure apartment should have lockable doors and windows. Confirm this when viewing the apartment before signing the lease.

You can also change the locks - with the landlord's permission. That way, you rule out unauthorized entries by other third parties who might have copies of the current keys. Note that you may have to foot the lock replacement bill, depending on the landlord.

Upper Floor Unit

As previously mentioned, criminals will attack easier targets before difficult ones. An upper floor unit is a more difficult target than a lower floor unit is. Targeting a higher floor unit increases the risk of discovery. The criminal would have to use lifts, stairs, or scale the building. Thus, you should opt for a higher floor unit if you have the choice.

Adequate Lighting

A safe apartment also has adequate lighting, especially outdoors or in common areas. Most criminals won't attack you in well-lit areas for fear of discovery. Operating in an illuminated area also means you can spot potential dangers in time. Thus, you should see adequate lighting around:

  • Swimming pools
  • Hallways
  • Parking areas
  • Trash chutes
  • Pet washing areas

You can assess the lighting adequacy at night or ask the apartment's management about it.

Security System

A secure apartment block should also have a security system in place. Examples include:

  • Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in common areas
  • Access control systems
  • Physical barriers, such as fences

Again, the property management or landlord can help you understand the security features and systems they have in place.

Good General Upkeep

In most cases, you can tell that an apartment is secure from the moment you walk through the main entryway. For example, a secure apartment will have:

  • Clean common areas
  • Well-trimmed lawns
  • Trimmed fences
  • Clean paint
  • Sound and functional outdoor faucets

The above are signs of security since property managers who care about security also care about other maintenance practices.

Community Services and Amenities

You should also know your potential apartment is secure if the property has features or facilities that encourage communal living. Such features and facilities include:

  • Communal swimming pools
  • Fitness centers
  • Outdoor grilling stations
  • Business centers

You get to know your neighbors when you interact with others in the communal areas. Neighbors who know you well are likely to identify strangers on the property or near your unit and intervene if necessary.

Package Delivery System

A package delivery system is also a security sign since it limits those who can access your packages. Such a system also means potential criminals don't access your unit under the guise of package delivery. A good and reliable package delivery system should be available round the clock.

Low Crime Statistics

Neighborhood security also affects your personal security. A safe apartment sits in a safe neighborhood. Here are some signs of a safe neighborhood:

  • Low crime statistics
  • Lots of community amenities and events
  • Thriving local businesses
  • Children's playgrounds

Therefore, research your target neighborhood before you move in. For example, many local governments have online resources you can use to confirm crime statistics. Ensure to narrow down the search to your exact area since crime stats can vary a lot between specific neighborhoods.
